Notes & Review by Clay Gregory:
This concert represents the 25th year anniversary of my first ZZ Top show. Since that March 1977 show at the old Boston Garden I have seen every tour a number of times. I believe I have seen the boyzz about 40-45 times in the northeast.
Pre- concert: There were three or four different T shirts for sale (@$35ea.)
as well as the usual key chains and sunglasses.
1. A country tribute T- black same as the cover
2. A white T with a line drawing of the boyzz and the names Dusty, Willy and Beardless
3. A T with the state of Texas outline and pictures of each album cover within the outline
I think I'll wait to see what Noreen gets after the tour. I was looking for a "casino 2002" but didn't see anything
Crowd: Full house (10,000?), late arriving but very enthusiastic. Most looked over 40.
Stage: very small stage and set. The vintage mic stands were probably only 12 feet in front of the drum riser. The backdrop looks like Xmas tinsel. They had 3 of those new 2 dimensional purple cactus and two tumbleweeds. Lap dog was on stage but no light bulb for La Grange. BTW lap dogs eyes and mouth light up red during the show. They had 6 guitar and 6 bass speakers on either side of the drums. The cabinets were purple and the face cloth was white. The drum riser was only about a foot high. Purple drums - a small kit with one floor bass. The equipment off stage was also very sparse. I saw only one table and one effects rack on Billy's side.
Crew: I saw Billy Hale in his red suit taking care of Dusty. No sign of Elwood unless he has gone to a more "normal" look. Only two guys sat on Billy's side all night.
Instruments: Frank had the small purple kit. Billy used one Les Paul style guitar for most of the show. The strap had the monkey on his back. He used another Les Paul for Dust my Broom and the fuzzy white explorer for Legs. He is taking about 5 of those Les Pauls on this tour. Dusty used 2 different fenders for most of the show and the custom XXX bass for the encore. For the first time ever I saw Dusty fixing the tuning of his instrument during one of the songs. He usually just thumps what they give him.
Attire: The XXX sequined coats. Dusty didn't wear his riding boots. He just had black jeans with regular black cowboy boots. Frank had the usual "too big" black T shirt. Billy wore his hat all night and Dusty wore the beret. No cowboy hats this time.
The show: No opening act. The Top opened at 8:15 with TSBoogie after the Ross Mitchel intro. The sound was real muddy at first. You would think that a 6 mos. old arena would have better sound. Anyway, the boyzz proceeded to rip it up for an hour and 35 minutes. The set list was the same as already posted. It was great to hear Beer Drinkers, I Thank You (with Dusty singing the 2nd verse), Mexican Blackbird- the boyzz stopped playing for the line "she spreads like an eagle" to huge applause. Dust my Broom also rocked. Billy really let go on Rough Boy. People always seem to get up for a bathroom break during I loved a Woman and Bang Bang but I thought they were great. I should also note that Billy looked healthier than he did during the entire decade of the 90's. Billy and Dusty did all the usual dance steps. I think one of the highlights of the show was "Future Blues". Although, people on the internet claim this is an old song, I don't think so. I think Billy said it was new during his little intro. Anyway, it smokes - a mid tempo blues shuffle which features Dusty on vocals. At the end Billy really rips off some great licks and then it comes to a weird ZZ ending. I hope it is a new tune on the next CD. The show ended at 9:50 with La Grange (and the "surfs up" break) and Tush. Billy enjoyed his cigar during the slide solo. This was the only time he played slide for us on this night although the guy behind me kept yelling for Just Got Paid. I never realized that the band just stands behind the stage before the encore. They heard a real loud and pumped crowd last night. When security wasn't pushing people back in their seat the floor was up and dancing. See you at the next show. Stay clean...
MORE INFORMATION:
A US tour commenced in March 2003 with the boyzz
playing RodeoHouston for their second time. The tour was originally scheduled
to wrap
up in November with the boys playing the Compaq Center as the last show
in that arena before its closing.

BFG has Billy-Bo style guitar but black, not the red one. A reddish
aluminum slide and Gold Top Les Paul during Paid. Frank has new
colorful drum heads. BFG's brown cowboy boots are back and he has black pants
but no medallions down the legs anymore; his jacket does have "Willyboy". DH
wears a black baseball cap backwards. Backdrop is an animated curtain of
lights. Some songs are slower but the crowd never sat, two bras thrown
onstage. Show lasted about 1:35, attendance estimate 2500-3000.
Still no tour name. Prior notes
from Biloxi thanks to PB, DS and RCS.
Numerous other notes about extended jams and medleys.
Sold out at 2180 in Clearwater. Thanks to RC.
Seats quite tightly crammed. At the end of the show several pictures
of the boyzz were projected on the "lite bright" backdrop. Sound was "iffy",
DH seemed upset that the sound on the bass was very low. Drums were miked
up so loud they were occasionally distorted. Crowd was very anti standing.
Show lasted approx 1:30. No Jailhouse or Let's Go Get Stoned.
Thanks to EV and MH for the notes from Boca Raton.
Tour now has a name. Thanks to DS and ED. (Post Boca Raton)
"Lite brite" backdrop came only halfway down but was a good compliment to
the show. Some sounds distorted but overall a good show lasting 1:40. Show a
sellout at 1918. Thanks to TJ & RC for notes from Jacksonville.
Good crowd, 3/4 full, enthusiastic and standing. Excellent sound. New
intro from Pablo, "When I say ZZ... you say TOP!" Show lasted approx 1:45.
Thanks to PB & DS for notes from Orange Beach, Alabama.
Durant, Oklahoma:
Sold out show (~10k) in a big warehouse with a dirt floor. Another
"I say ZZ, you say Top" intro. "Hell yeah" La Grange
as opposed to Hollywood where it was "Surf's Up". A big guy had Pablo throwing
people out with big camera lenses. Thanks
to KW, RC.
Houston: No opener except the rodeo. Revolving stage, no lite-brite
backdrop. Old standard into (no I Say ZZ). Short show lasting approx 1:10
with no encore, announced attendance approx 70k.
Two mariachis were onstage at the start and the band opened
with "Ring of Fire, while actual rings of fire were lit ablaze on the floor
of the stadium. Mariachis left after the first song and later
Elwood played steel guitar onstage with
the band, playing "Waltz Across Texas". After the show BFG drove the band
off in a black convertible. Thanks to KW.
Beaumont: Still the "I say ZZ" type intro which continues to work well.
Thanks to GD.
Bridgeview: No intro, no lite-brite possibly due to winds. 75 minute
set possibly due to local curfew. No encore. Many seats unsold. "Hell
yeah" during La Grange and no cigar at the end. Foxy Lady well done and
well received by crowd.
Wantagh: Approx 80 minute set. Lite-brite was used.
Noblesville, IN: Lite-brite was used. Dollar store speech. Elwood did light
the cigar this time. Thanks to AH.
Lubbock: Estimate 10,000 out of 12k capy. Thanks to RH and TH.
Evansville: Billy threw a pick to a front row fan during La Grange & never
replaced it. Same Dollar Store story. Lite Brite still being used. Thanks to
AH.
San Francisco: 85-90 minute set. Sold out @ 2300 Thanks to JC & DG.
Reno: 92 minute set. Venue of ~1800, possible sell out but a late move
from a venue of 4000. Thanks to DG.
